THE PIXI GLOW TONIC is an exfoliating toner that helps to firm and tighten normal to dry, dull and ageing skin. The brightening tonic removes dead skin cells, leaving skin healthy and radiant-looking. Formulated with 5% Glycolic Acid, it hydrates the skin whilst Aloe Vera and Ginseng help to nourish during and treat. Expect a smooth and glowing complexion. Without further ado; let’s get to the most hyped up product we probably all have heard of at least once.

The #1 product of Pixi, a brand that has a huge cult following, the Pixi glow tonic is their most famous product still going. Marrying affordability with efficacy, Pixi’s skin care solutions have quickly acquired legions of devotees – from top beauty bloggers and editors, to die-hard customers who are totally addicted to their simple-yet-sophisticated range. This gorgeously glow-giving tonic has received endless acclaim thanks to its ability to dissolve the bonds binding dead, dulling cells to the skin’s surface, revealing the radiance beneath. Beautifully gentle and soothing, this is a definitive Cult classic.

I, personally, haven’t been using Western toners anymore since I found out about Korean skincare years ago, but when I finally saw lookfantastic.com finally selling Pixi products I had to try this toner out. Is it really as good as people say? Let’s find out!

What is my skin type?
Combination on the T-zone, dry and dehydrated/rough on the C-zone of my face. I also have a lot of redness and my skin is very sensitive and prone to breaking out when not cleansed properly.

What is it and what are the claims?

Instantly refreshing, Pixi’s gorgeous glow-giver brightens, tones and conditions your skin after cleansing. Enriched with 5% glycolic acid – a natural derivative of sugar cane, and member of the alpha-hydroxy acid family – this gentle, exfoliating formula dissolves the bonds binding dulling dead cells to skin’s surface, to reveal the ‘new’ healthy skin cells underneath. Aloe then soothes and hydrates while oxygenating ginseng promotes cell health and skin vibrancy; witch hazel firms and tones, while horse chestnut boosts blood flow, to grant your complexion a naturally fresh and dewy radiance. Astonishingly affordable, this is mild yet effective, making it suitable for all skin types – just apply a few drops to a cotton wool pad, and sweep all over skin after cleansing (morning and evening) to gradually diminish signs of sun damage, fine lines, scarring and other imperfections.

The Pixi Glow Tonic™ is highly concentrated, invigorating facial toner that deeply cleans pores by sweeping away excess oil and impurities.

What are the ingredients?

Water/Aqua/Eau, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycolic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Hexylene Glycol, Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Urea, Dextrin, Alanine, Glutamic Acid, Aspartic Acid, Hexyl Nicotinate, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Biotin, Panthenol, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Caramel, Red 4 (CI 14700).

I’ve grabbed a few amazing ingredients to tell you a little bit more about:

Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera has been used for a host of purposes since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality.” With anti-inflammatory and cooling properties, Aloe Vera gel is the perfect remedy for irritated and sunburned skin. It provides a protective layer to the skin which helps retain moisture. Aloe is also rich in antioxidants and minerals which can help speed healing.
Hamamelis Virginiana Leaf Extract: One of witch hazel’s most impressive properties is its anti-inflammatory effects on conditions such as acne and rosacea/redness. Only two of the extracts exhibited active oxygen-scavenging effects and protective activity against cell damage, with one being Hamamelis virginiana.
Glycolic Acid (AHA):  Glycolic acid is a water soluble alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that can be found naturally in the cane sugar of fruit juices like grape and orange. It also increases collagen production and the hyaluronic acid content in skin.
Horse Chestnut Extract: Horse chestnut is usually used as main factor of anti – wrinkle products. The powerful anti-oxidant proanthocyanins found in Aescin play a role in the stabilisation of collagen and elastin in the skin. They also act to reduce water retention and help protect the capillaries. Aescin has been shown to inhibit hyaluronidase, an enzyme that can break down the hyaluronic acid found in our skin. As our skin uses this as a moisturising component, a reduction in this enzyme can lead to an increase in skin hydration.
Ginseng Root Extract: Ginseng is prized as an anti-ageing ingredient because it has so many phytonutrients, and because it helps tone and brighten your skin.

First of all; I’m very happy to read that the tonic really is alcohol free! Alcohol is one of the ingredients in most products that really irritate my sensitive skin and cause my entire face to flare up (mostly straight away). The Glycolic Acid made me feel pretty anxious, because it can be harsh on some people’s skins. The ingredient list looks pretty neat to me, which is great!

Pixi Glow Tonic is a gentle exfoliating toner that promises to deliver more even, brighter and clearer skin. It claims to remove dead skin cells to reveal healthy-glowing skin and a refined texture that looks and feels smooth, thanks to its glycolic acid content.

Zooming into the product:

Application: After (double) cleansing your skin, saturate a cotton pad with the Glow Tonic™ and sweep across face, neck and décolletage (avoiding eye area). You can also try using it the K-beauty way: applying a bit on the palms of your hands and pat it gently into your skin and neck area. Follow with the rest of your skincare regimen.

Scent wiseThe toner isn’t heavy scented, so it works for people who don’t like perfumed products as well. It slightly smells of roses to me, but a fresh spa kind of roses scent if you know what I mean.

Packaging: The bottle is very simple, has a small hole so that you can’t spill too much product all at once. I absolutely love the green label Pixi uses for their products, it makes instantly feel very luxurious.

Texture: The toner has the consistency of water. It is very thin

Where does it go in the skincare routine: I, personally, use this as an extra step most of the evenings before applying my hydrating toner. It makes my skin a lot smoother than when I skip this step. I don’t use the toner in the mornings, because of my sensitive skin.

For who: I think this toner would be a good step in the skincare routine of everyone. This toner especially works wonders if you have rough and bumpy textured skin.

Purchase info:

I buy all of my Pixi products from lookfantastic.com, because it is easily available to me in Europe. The price of the toner is usually around €23,95 and around €20 if there’s a sale going on.  It’s not the cheapest toner and there definitely are other good AHA products available, but because this toner doesn’t have alcohol in it is definitely makes it one of a kind.

Final thoughts:

I really love the Pixi Glow Tonic and use it almost every evening, because it helps my skin’s texture staying as smooth as possible. I don’t experience any hydrating effects of this product, but most of the time my skin is extremely dry and most toners are not hydrating my skin at all. It does make my skin flare up a bit, but that’s probably because I usually apply it with a cotton pad (the wiping motion makes my skin flare up). Will I recommend and repurchase this toner? I definitely do!

The Pixi Glow Tonic gets a 5 out of 5 paws!
